The face of Christ is raised at the centre of this cross, eyes closed, framed by a gold-tone crown of thorns that twists across the brow in real relief you can feel under your thumb. Above it sits the titulus reading INRI, and the flowing robe carries down the lower arm of the cross. The darkened, oxidised finish settles into every carved line, so the details stay sharp instead of flattening out in the light.
